The “Jewels for Democracy” exhibition is one of the main events of the Biennial, opening in April 2024 at the Royal Treasury Museum, in Lisbon. This initiative was a challenge to PIN members to create a piece of jewellery for a woman who has distinguished herself in the fight for democracy and democratic values. 

In the celebrations of the Revolution we will certainly talk about many men, from the "April captains" to the politicians who led the regime. This project aims to highlight the role of women who, through their own work or through the roles they performed alongside their husbands in high positions, participated in the construction of democracy or suffered especially from the dictatorship in their personal, family or professional lives, namely women artists. Assuming that jewellery is, in our times, an object still closely linked to the feminine, we want to pay homage to these women whose lives are also inscribed in the history of Portuguese and global democracy. These pieces will be exhibited at the Royal Treasury Museum and a prize will be awarded to three pieces, chosen by a jury. 

The women to be honored are entirely up to the authors: they may have had political functions or not, they may have accompanied their husbands to political functions, anonymous women, family members or public figures, artists, writers, educators, activists, etc. In temporal terms, the choice should fall on someone who was active between the Academic Crisis of 1962 and accession to the EEC in 1986 or someone who especially suffered/fought against the dictatorship, whether due to the limitation of rights or political persecution. There was, however, some flexibility in the dates. In addition to Portuguese women, some women who, in other geographies, defended, suffered, and fought for the same ideals will also be honored.
